The School of Energy & Power Engineering of Xi'an Jiaotong University developed from the Department of Power Machinery Manufacture, which was founded in 1952 in Shanghai and later moved to Xi'an together with the main body of Jiaotong University in 1956. In 1975, the department of Machinery Manufacture and parts of the department of Engineering Physics were merged and re-constructed into two new departments: Department of Energy & Power Engineering and Department of Power Machinery Engineering. In April 1994, with the adjustment of Schools and Departments in Xi'an Jiaotong University, these two departments were merged and developed into the Energy & Power Engineering School. In July of 2004, the main body of the School of Environmental and Chemical Engineering joined into the School of Energy & Power Engineering and forms the present Energy & Power Engineering School. |
With long history, the School has more than ten of specialists with high reputation and famous young scholars in the academic and engineering fields of energy and power aspects. The school has 283 teaching and researching staffs, including 227 teachers, 29 lab technicians, 72 professors and 68 associate professors. Among these, there is one academician of the Chinese Academy of Science and one academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 8 well-known scholars who have been granted as the National Outstanding Achievement Experts. 94% of teachers possess Ph.D. degree. Among young scholars, 3 persons are awarded as the Cheung Kong Scholars from the Ministry of Education of China, 3 persons are awarded as the distinguishing young scholars from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 1 persons is selected as "Ten Million Talent Project" by the Ministry of Personnel and jointly by other 6 Ministries, 1 persons is selected as “Ten Million Talent Project of the New Century” by the Ministry of Personnel jointly with other 6 Ministries, 5 persons are selected as the cross-century excellent talents by the Ministry of Education, 6 persons are selected as the new-century excellent talents by the Ministry of Education, 4 persons receive the National Young Science and Technology Award, 5 persons become “Hundred Excellent Ph.D. Dissertation Receiver”. 1 person has entered into the program for the excellent core teacher by the Ministry of Education, 3 persons research work are supported by the "Excellent Young Teacher Project" and 8 persons by the "Core Teacher Project" by the Ministry of Education, Meanwhile, 6 persons are elected as the talents by Shannxi Provincial Government, 2 persons receive the Huo-Yingdong University Young Teacher Award and 4 persons entered the Young Talent Program of Xi'an Jiaotong University. |
The school have post-doctoral research stations in Power Machinery and Engineering Thermophysics and Nuclear Science and Engineering. The disciplines include Engineering Thermophysics, Thermal Energy Engineering, Power Machinery and Engineering, Fluid Machinery and Engineering, Refrigeration and Cryogenic Engineering, Chemical Flow Machinery, Nuclear Science, Nuclear Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Environmental Engineering. Among them, the disciplines of Thermal Energy Engineering, Power Machinery and Engineering, Fluid Machinery and Engineering, Refrigeration and Cryogenic Engineering are the State Key Disciplines. Thermal Power Engineering and Nuclear Engineering and Tec hnology were elected to be the famous specialties by Shannxi Provincial Government. The school also possesses a Thermal & Fluid Teaching and Experimental Center, which can provide good facilities for high quality special education and talent training. There are 1776 full-time undergraduate students, 701 Ph. D candidates, 860 graduate students and 483 non-full-time GCT candidates in our school. During national assessments, the second-level disciplines of Thermal Engineering as well as Fluid Machinery and Engineering were rated first across the country. The education quality of the first-level discipline, Power Engineering and Thermal Fluid Science, ranked first among the similar disciplines (discipline assessment result in 2012). Our school is the discipline (Power Engineering and Engineering Thermophysics) appraisal group convener unit for the State Council Academic Degrees Committee, director and general-secretary units of the Advisor Committee of Energy Power Engineering of MOE in university, chairman unit of Thermal Fluid Science Committee, China Association of Higher Education. |
The school has many research institutes, including Boiler Research Institute, Power Plant Thermal Energy Research Institute, Power System Engineering Research Institute, Fluid Machinery Research Institute, Refrigeration and Cryogenic Research Institute, Compressor Research Institute, Internal Combustion Engine Research Institute, Impeller Machinery Research Institute, Turbomachinery Research Institute, Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning, Nuclear and Thermal Power Engineering, Engineering Thermophysics Research Institute. Three national research institutions are located in the school, they are the State Key Laboratory of Multiphase Flow in Power Engineering, the National Engineering Research Center of Fluid Machinery & Compressor and State Key Laboratory of Fluid Machinery. The School is providing an excellent hardware and human environment for basic scientific research and technology improvement and transferring. Numbers of inventions and achievements in international or national level have been achieved, and more than 100 awards in state level and provincial level were received. Two of the research achievements are in the list of 100 national projects whose average economic benefit exceeds RMB 100 million yuan. From 2001 the school has received three national science and technology awards. Now, more than 200 state and provincial projects are being carried out in school. Research fund of the school exceeds RMB 30 million yuan each year. The school has established long-term collaboration with many Industries and research Institutes from many countries and regions to jointly conduct interested research projects, such as United States, Russia, Japan, Korea, Hong Kong etc. |
The School is at top level in China for its comprehensive capability. In 2001, it was ascertained as the director of Energy & Power Teaching and Instructing Committee, the director of Thermodynamics & Heat Transfer Teaching and Instructing Branch Committee and vice-director of Nuclear Engineering & Technology Teaching and Instructing Branch Committee. In 2002, it was ascertained the vice-director of the Power Engineering Teaching and Instructing Branch, vice-director of the Energy & Power Discipline Teaching and Instructing Branch. Over half of the national textbooks in energy and power engineering fields were written by the professors of the school, among them two textbooks received the national awards. Recent years through supporting by the national “211 Project” and “985 Project”, the school has made a great improvement in discipline construction, talent training and scientific research. Currently, the school is carrying out the second phase of national “211 Project” and “985 Project” and to raise the school, its disciplines and its researchers into the international level. |
Many collaboration activities are being conducted in the school, it has established long-term collaboration with nearly 100 domestic factories and scientific research units to jointly conduct the interested research projects, it has also collaborated with the universities, colleges and research institutions from USA, Canada, Italy, Germany, France, Japan, Russia, etc. in academic exchange, conducting scientific research, and supervising students corporately. Now over 30 teachers are working for high degree and conducting cooperative research projects at abroad and the returned teachers during the past decades have formed the main resource in teaching, research and school development. |
